USA Balls Up. Rory McIlroy laughed off a viral U.S. Ryder Cup T-shirt that appeared to feature his silhouette. Noting it resembled Adam Scott more than himself, McIlroy joked he wouldn’t mind if American fans wore it. The $65 Ralph Lauren shirt stirred debate online before being quietly removed from sale.

Cheers Greg. Greg Norman announced his departure from LIV Golf after four years, three as CEO. He helped launch the league, expand globally, and boost prize money across pro golf. Norman acknowledged controversies but celebrated LIV’s growth. With Scott O’Neil now leading, LIV eyes long-term stability, while Norman teased “exciting” future plans.

TopGolf In Hot Water. A federal jury in Oregon awarded $15 million against Topgolf after a nine-year-old boy suffered severe skull and brain injuries when struck by a golf club during a 2021 birthday party. The lawsuit argued Topgolf ignored safety warnings dating back to 2013, failed to give a required safety talk, and didn’t install protective barriers. The jury found Topgolf 97% responsible, rejecting defences that signage and announcements sufficed, or that party hosts should have supervised better. Topgolf settled punitive damages after the verdict.

Daly Is A Nutter. John Daly set an unfortunate PGA Tour Champions record at the Sanford International, carding a 19 on the par-5 12th hole after finding water seven times. The 59-year-old two-time major winner surpassed his previous infamous 18 at Bay Hill in 1998. Daly finished with an 88.

RULES
Interesting Rule That Many Of You May Not Know

German pro Marcel Siem was disqualified from the BMW PGA Championship after a bizarre rules lapse on the 18th hole. Believing his drive was lost in a hazard, he hit a provisional ball.

Spectators later located his original ball in the hazard, but instead of returning to the tee for a penalty drop, Siem declared it unplayable, picked it up, and continued with the provisional, making bogey.

After reviewing his card, he realized the mistake and self-reported. Siem clarified on social media that he “didn’t cheat” but simply erred, accepting disqualification with humility after a difficult two weeks.

Rule Infringement Explanation

  • The rule breached relates to Rule 18.3 (Provisional Ball) and Rule 14.7 (Playing from Wrong Place) of the Rules of Golf:

  • A provisional ball is only valid if the original is lost outside a penalty area or is out of bounds.

  • Since Siem’s original ball was found in a penalty area, the provisional became invalid.

  • By continuing with it, he played from the wrong place.

  • Failing to correct this by returning to the tee for his third shot led to disqualification once the scorecard was signed with the wrong procedure.
