TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

How The Newly Proposed Tour Championship Will Look

The PGA Tour is set to revise the Tour Championship format, possibly as early as this season, in response to ongoing criticism of the current structure, including from defending FedEx Cup champion Scottie Scheffler, who called it “silly.”

🔑 Key Points:

  • Current Format Issues:

    • Top 30 players start with staggered strokes (leader at -10, down to even par), introduced in 2019.

    • Aimed to crown one unified champion, but players and fans have found it confusing and unfair.

  • Expected Changes:

    • Starting strokes will likely be eliminated, making scoring more straightforward.

    • Match play unlikely — too different from regular-season stroke play.

    • Focus is on making the format more traditional, understandable, and respected.

  • Proposed Concepts:

    • One idea included cutting the field progressively (e.g., 16 → 8 → 4), though it may not be the final version.

    • The new format is designed to increase drama and consequence while keeping the event competitive.

  • Who’s Involved:

    • Players like Adam Scott, Sam Burns, and Kevin Kisner have offered input.

    • Final approval still needed from broadcast partners (NBC, CBS) and sponsors (FedEx, Coca-Cola).

  • Goal:

    • Create a format that’s better for players, fans, sponsors, and TV, without needing future tweaks.
