Short News Snippets From Around The World
King Tiger. Tiger Woods claimed the $10M top spot in the PGA Tour's final Player Impact Program (PIP) despite playing only five events in 2024. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy followed in second and third. The PIP, rewarding player influence, is succeeded by a $100M Player Equity Program in 2025. I am not surprised that they are stopping this. I doesnât really make sense to me.
Trevor Takes Over The Reigns. Trevor Immelman, 2008 Masters champion, will become OWGR Chairman on April 10, 2025, succeeding Peter Dawson. Immelman, a South African golf icon and CBS lead analyst, aims to uphold OWGR's mission. OWGR announced new points distribution for low-field tournaments and the inclusion of Taiwanâs PGA Tour in 2025 rankings.
See You In Court. Puma has filed a lawsuit claiming Tiger Woods' Sun Day Red logo resembles its iconic leaping cat design, citing potential consumer confusion. This follows a similar suit by Tigeraire. Woodsâ brand, launched in 2024, represents his 15 major wins. TaylorMade, which owns Sun Day Red, expressed confidence in its trademarks.
Creator Classic. The Creator Classic, featuring YouTube golfers, expands to three PGA Tour events in 2025: the Players Championship, Truist Championship, and Tour Championship. The 2024 debut drew 2.6 million YouTube views and 60 million social media impressions. PGA Tour embraces YouTube golf to innovate, engage fans, and boost audience growth.
TGL Is A Hit. The TGLâs debut on ESPN averaged 919,000 viewers, surpassing expectations and outperforming its lead-in basketball game. While promising, long-term success depends on sustained audience growth beyond the novelty of week one. With Tiger Woodsâ participation this week and potential NFL Wild Card synergy, future ratings will clarify the leagueâs trajectory.
Wild Fire. Sahith Theegala has pledged to raise funds for Los Angeles fire relief by donating $100 per birdie and $250 per eagle through the PGA Tourâs West Coast swing. Fires have devastated over 35,000 acres, with evacuation zones including Riviera Country Club, host of The Genesis Invitational in February. He made 15 birdies this week. Letâs hope more players get behind this.

PUMA vs SUN DAY RED
Puma Files Lawsuit Against Tiger Woodsâ Sun Day Red Logo
In a high-profile legal battle, Puma has filed a lawsuit against Tiger Woods' golf apparel brand, Sun Day Red, alleging that its logo infringes on Puma's long-established âLeaping Catâ trademark. According to Pumaâs filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Sun Day Red logoâs depiction of a leaping tiger with 15 stripesâa nod to Woodsâ major championship winsâbears a âconfusing similarityâ to Pumaâs iconic feline design.
This legal action follows a separate lawsuit from Tigeraire, another brand accusing Sun Day Red of copying its tiger-themed branding. While Tigeraire's case remains unresolved, Pumaâs filing underscores a deeper concern about brand identity and consumer confusion in a competitive market.
TaylorMade, which owns Sun Day Red, has defended the logo, stating confidence in its trademarks and dismissing the claims as baseless. Woods introduced the brand in 2024 after parting ways with Nike, explaining that the logo symbolizes his career milestones.
Analysis and Opinion
Pumaâs claim hinges on the argument that the logos are âconfusingly similarâ and could mislead consumers. However, the outcome may depend on whether the court sees Sun Day Redâs tiger design as distinct enough due to its focus on Woodsâ personal legacy. Pumaâs longstanding logo provides a strong basis for their claim, but TaylorMadeâs ability to argue the uniqueness of the tigerâs representation could tilt the case in their favor.
Given the legal complexities and high stakes, this case could result in a settlement to avoid prolonged litigation and public scrutiny.
