Short News Snippets From Around The World
Player of the Year. World No. 1 Nelly Korda clinched the 2024 LPGA Player of the Year title with three events remaining, thanks to an impressive season featuring six victories, including a major. With another Hall of Fame point, Korda now holds 18 points toward the required 27 for induction. She’ll receive the award officially at the CME Group Tour Championship on Nov. 20.
The Trump Effect. Rory McIlroy suggested that Donald Trump and Elon Musk could facilitate unity between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf due to Trump’s strong ties with Saudi Arabia and his influence in golf. Trump has previously claimed he could quickly resolve the split, yet McIlroy acknowledges that the complexity of negotiations might be underestimated. The PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been working on a merger since mid-2023, but achieving a final agreement remains challenging.
Unhappy Paddy. Padraig Harrington voiced strong opposition to the PGA Tour’s 2026 proposed changes, critiquing the shift towards exclusivity with reduced field sizes, fewer exempt players, and cuts to Monday qualifiers. Harrington argues these changes limit new talent and excitement, favouring established players. The Policy Board’s upcoming vote may reshape golf’s structure significantly.
Not Wanted. Jason Day confirmed he was never formally offered a contract with LIV Golf, which had concerns about his injury history. Day initially considered LIV as a "business move" but ultimately found staying with the PGA Tour beneficial. Now ranked 34th, Day feels grateful for his decision, hoping for unity between the PGA Tour and LIV.
The Legend Continues. Bernhard Langer claimed his 47th PGA Tour Champions victory, winning the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at 67, marking an 18th consecutive winning season. Langer’s decisive 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole edged out Steven Alker and Richard Green by one stroke. Alker, the 2023 season points champion, finished T2. Langer, recovering from an Achilles injury, broke his own record as the Tour's oldest winner.
